Federal election  is called

Conservative MP seeks third term; local Liberals to select candidate tonight

SOUTH GRENVILLE – Speculation has finally given way to an official campaign.

Parliament was dissolved on Sunday, paving the way for a federal election on Tuesday, Oct. 14. The Conservative Party of Canada led by Prime Minister Stephen Harper held a minority government that was elected in Jan. 2006.

Leeds-Grenville Conservative MP Gord Brown is seeking re-election to a third term. The Gananoque businessman received more than 28,000 votes in the 2006 election, more than twice as many as the second-place finisher, Liberal candidate and Prescott resident Bob Eaton. Steve Armstrong of the New Democrats placed third, followed by David Lee of the Green party.

Eaton is not seeking the local Liberal nomination. The party’s candidate in Leeds-Grenville has yet to be selected. Paula du Hamel Yellow Horn, a Merrickville resident and native scholar, filed her nomination papers early this spring.
