Michael Barrett, M.P. calls for Parliament to reconvene to end CN Strike

[BROCKVILLE, ON] Many local farmers and elevators have been advised that their shipments of propane have ceased, due to the CN rail strike. As a result, Member of Parliament for Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes, Michael Barrett, has called for the House of Commons to reconvene immediately to address the strike.

"The Prime Minister needs to take the urgent step of recalling Parliament and tabling emergency legislation addressing the CN Rail strike. This would show both sides of this dispute that the government is serious about ending the strike. I think this could result in an agreement being reached much sooner." said Michael Barrett.

CN Rail is one of two main rail networks that Canada uses to ship consumer goods. The company carries $250 billion worth of goods annually and has increasingly been moving into shipping oil amid a bottleneck of pipelines from Alberta's energy sector.

"This year has been a rough one for our farmers. This added uncertainty leaves product on the fields and farmers worried about paying their bills. We need to act immediately to get these trains running, propane delivered, grain drying, and our world class agricultural exports to market," said Barrett.
