Elsie Graham, 93
On August 3, 2006, in her 94th year, Elsie M. Graham passed
away peacefully at Sherwood Park Manor where she had lived for
the past two years having moved to Brockville from Toronto in
1997. She is survived by her beloved husband Ted (Edwin) Graham
of Brockville, daughters Sandra S. Lawn of Prescott and Christine
Hesketh of Smiths Falls, sons-in-law Robert Lawn and Fred Hesketh,
daughter-in-law Sharleen Graham of London, Ontario, eight grandchildren,
10 great grand children and several nieces and nephews in Alberta.
Her son Peter Edwin Graham, eight siblings and parents August
Bruns and Agnes Oss Bruns predeceased Elsie.
Elsie Bruns was born on a farm near Lacombe, Alberta in 1913.
She attended a one-room country school where she later became
the teacher. Her horse, Spider, dropped her off at school every
day. At the end of the day, Spider would return to the school
and patiently wait until Elsie was ready for the ride home. In
1933, Elsie Bruns' met Ted Graham of Red Deer and, in 1937, she
proceeded by train to Sudbury, to marry Ted, then a Queen's University
mining engineering student working underground for INCO.
From 1938 to 1968, Elsie and Ted lived in nine northern mining
communities in four different provinces. In 1991, The Canadian
Institute of Mining and Metallurgy honoured Elsie Graham with
the Sancta Barbara Medal, to "recognize the important role
played by women in the progressive development of Canadian Mining
communities." In this national tribute it was recognized
that "she has enlightened and brightened many mining communities
across Canada."
By 1968, Ted's work as a consulting mining engineer took them
to Montreal and then to Toronto. Elsie enjoyed city life, attending
musical performances and the opera and volunteering for the Rehabilitation
Centre and the Women's Association of the Mining Industry of
Canada. The Canadian Red Cross awarded her a 20-year service
medal in 1993.
All grandchildren spent memorable times with Elsie, in Toronto
and at the two cottages, on Long Lake near Noranda, Quebec and
Lake Simcoe, north of Toronto. Everyone who knew her, especially
her grade three students in Noranda, Quebec and her Jubilee Guild
friends in Springdale, Newfoundland, loved Elsie.
A life-long learner, Elsie's passion for mathematics, literacy,
music, nature and world events and her positive caring attitude
are ingrained in her grandchildren Andrea, Kerrie and Julia Lawn,
Christian, Geoffrey and Caitlin Hesketh and Ted and Nathalie
Graham. Her meetings with her great grandchildren were also special
tender moments.
The active, dynamic Elsie everyone loved had been "absent"
for some time, but even in her final two years of life, her kind
smile had warmed the hearts of the Sherwood Park Manor community.
The staff at Sherwood Park took good care of her and the family
is most grateful. Elsie will live on in the hearts of all who
knew her in her prime or in her final years of struggling with
the devastation of Alzheimer's disease.
Reverend Eric Barr of the United Church of Canada presided
over the memorial service at the Irvine Funeral Home and Chapel
in Brockville on August 7, 2006. Eldest grandchild Andrea Lawn
presented the eulogy and Kerrie Lawn and Caitlin Hesketh read
the scriptures. Pallbearers were: grandsons-in-law Bruce Anderson
and Rodney Henderson, grandsons Ted Graham Jr., Christian Hesketh
and Geoffrey Hesketh and great grandson Peter Edwin Nielsen.
Jean Smith, 68
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Jean
Marcella Smith (nee Heximer), 68, of RR#2 Prescott. She died
peacefully at the Brockville General Hospital on July 20, 2006
after a brief battle with cancer.
Jean was born in Fort Erie, Ontario on Sept. 21, 1937 to Carl
and Mary Heximer. She was raised and educated in Welland, Ontario,
where she received her Secondary School graduation diploma in
the Commerce program at Welland High and Vocational School. Jean
then joined the Toronto Dominion Bank in Welland, Ontario where
she met Lawrence (Larry) W. Smith. They were married on at St.
John's Lutheran Church in Snyder, Ontario on Sept. 15, 1962.
After marriage, Jean left the bank to become a homemaker, proud
mother and community volunteer. During this time she was supportive
of her husband in his career, moving with him to each of his
postings in Preston, Barrie, London, Windsor and Pickering before
settling in Prescott in 1976. They raised their family in Riverview
Heights and then later moved to their farm on Hillbrook Road,
where they planned to spend their retirement years together.

arthritis stop her from being an active member in her community.

and Stroke Foundation. She also volunteered her time with hospitals
and nursing homes in the Brockville area. She was a member of
the Legion Seniors and held the post of treasurer for this club.
She was also an avid curler for many years and was proud to have
served as the first female president of the Prescott Curling
Club.
Jean truly loved to travel and had many wonderful trips with
her husband, her family and her close friends. Camping was an
annual family event each summer when her children were young.
Later trips to Arizona, Barbados, the Panama Canal and other
exotic locations with family and friends also became the fodder
for many happy memories.
Jean's greatest passion, beyond her grandchildren of course,
was playing cards. She enjoyed euchre at the Legion in Prescott,
blackjack at the casinos during the seniors' trips, and more
recently Wednesday night poker. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, Mondays
with the "Bridge Girls" was always the highlight of
her week!
She is survived by her three children. She will be sadly missed
by her son Greg, his wife Brenda and their children Alina, Lauren
and Benjamin; her son Tim, his wife Cindy and their children
Taylor and Dorrie; her son Jeff, his wife Pam and their children

River, her brother Don Heximer of Fonthill, sister-in-law Norma

Frank Robinson, 74

in Prescott on Jan. 24, 2006 at the age of 74.
He was born on Oct. 31, 1931 at Maynard to his parents Victor
Robinson and Margaret Hare. He married Betty Carol Robinson (nee
Dennis)
Frank, who was a maintenance worker at the DuPont Maitland
Site, was a man most comfortable at home surrounded by a loving
family, good books and his animal companions. Despite his love
of home, he spent many quality hours helping friends with odd
jobs in their homes or working in the community - many remember
him as a regular fixture behind the dishwasher at church functions.
He was a hard worker who took pride in his work, whether painting
a room, crafting a piece of furniture or totally renovating a
house.
A go-getter and hockey enthusiast, Frank took delight in his
sons' efforts in minor league hockey in the early days of the
Midget AA Tournament, which he co-convened with Charley MacFarlane.
His love of the sport continued into recent years, as he has
enjoyed watching his grandchildren play the game. Some believe
Frank cheered from the sidelines when his eight-year-old grandson,
Derek, following his sister Megan's lead, scored his first hockey
goal last week - just two weeks after his passing.
Frank was also an avid bowler in his earlier years a
sport he shared with his brother and led to an introduction to
a teammate and bride-to-be Betty Carol Dennis, a meeting that
formed the basis of a marriage that lasted more than five decades.
Along the way, after adding children and grandchildren to his
game, he added curling to his list of sports.
Husband, father, grandfather, friend - Frank will be missed
by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, children Bonnie Donaldson of Ottawa,

Jean was highly involved in the Ontario Senior games for District
9 and Area B and served as chairperson of the Senior Games in
