Paul Carmichael, 36

After a tragic accident that occurred at his home, Robert "Paul" Carmichael passed away peacefully at the Ottawa Civic Hospital on Aug. 13, 2004.

Paul was born Sept. 8, 1967 at Kemptville District Hospital to Robert Theodore Carmichael and the former Betty Ann Dutfield. He spent the first seven years of his life in Oxford Station and was baptized at East Oxford Presbyterian Church.

In 1975, Paul and his family moved to Ventnor where they operated a Holstein dairy farm. Paul attended North Edwardsburgh and Centennial public schools. He graduated from North Grenville District High School.

He owned and operated "Carmichael Collision" for many years and took great pride in his auto body shop.

As a young lad, he was a member of the South Grenville 4-H calf club.

He also enjoyed acting and playing baseball, hockey and soccer. These games were always exciting when "Squeek" was around.

Paul had a great interest in history and was extremely proud of his Scottish ancestry. Robbie Burns night at the Brockville Legion was one of his favourite evenings as he always got his fill of haggis.

He could always find time for the things he enjoyed like cruising around in his 1974 Dodge Challenger, playing hockey, bullhead fishing or deer hunting, but what he enjoyed most was sharing his self with others.

This would include talking with a small child or playing crokinole with a senior citizen, which he often did.

He was a proud, honest man who stood by his convictions of what was right and wrong.

Always there when you needed him, he was ready to give right to the very end as he donated his organs so others could live from this tragedy.

Paul had this vitality and energy around him that was very rarely found.

Paul will be sadly missed and is the loving son of Robert and Betty Carmichael of Spencerville. He is the cherished grandson of Margaret Dutfield and Eleanor Carmichael; dear brother of Craig (Kelly) of Cardinal and Shawn (Paula) of Spencerville; "fun-filled" uncle of Austin, Kelsee, Kiana, Danika, Makenna, Caleb and Nevaeh.

Brian Lawless opened the service by playing "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes. Heidi Woolford played the piano and sang "The Untitled Hymn" (Come to Jesus). Paul's brothers Craig and Shawn and long-time friend Bruce McKinnon gave the eulogies, and Paula Carmichael read a poem entitled "I'd Like." To the echoes of "Scotland the Brave" played on the bagpipes, Craig and Shawn led the funeral procession in Paul's yellow Challenger to the Adam's Cemetery where he was laid to rest.

The pallbearers were Bruce McKinnon, David Sadler, Jonathan Levett, Danny Powers, Claude Hiltz and Bill Van Camp.

Memorial donations to a charity of choice would be gratefully acknowledged.

"You were one of a kind, Paul, and we will miss you always. There is a void in everyone's life that knew you and that void will never be filled. As the words to the song Heidi sang, said, 'Come to Jesus, Dance with Jesus, Fly to Jesus and Live.'"

Gerben (Carmen) Cnossen, 70

Gerben (Carmen) Cnossen, RR 1 Prescott, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004 at Kingston General Hospital. He was 70.

He was born Aug. 22, 1933 in Hommerts, in the province of Friesland, The Netherlands, to Douwe Cnossen and Trijntje Veldhuis. He was married to Henny Cnossen (nee Knol). He came to Canada with his immediate family in the late 1940s.

Mr. Cnossen was employed in the rod mill at Phillips Cables for many years, and was highly regarded for both his mechanical knowledge and strong work ethic. During his lifetime he nurtured an abiding love of horses.

During the 1960s to 1970s, he was known as an excellent trainer and driver of racing pacers. Beginning in the 1980s, he began to show Hackney horses hitched to antique carriages, many of which he restored himself.

Mr. Cnossen had the knack to see an old carriage and know that with a little hard work he could restore it to its original beauty. During the 1990s, he fulfilled a lifelong dream when he purchased a handsome Friesian colt. Mr. Cnossen and his black stallion would go on to win many red ribbons at local fairs.

When he was not involved with training horses, cleaning harnesses or restoring carriages, Mr. Cnossen was often found hard at work in the fields with his beloved horses closely watching his every move. He laboured long hours over the years constructing new outbuildings at his farm, running fence lines and tending crops. As busy as he was, he always found the time to lend a hand to a friend in need.

Mr. Cnossen was a long standing member of the Eastern Ontario Pleasure Driving Society and enjoyed many long drives with his favourite stallion and his friends. He particularly enjoyed the leisurely drives down the Thousand Islands Parkway with the other club members in their horse-drawn carriages.

He was known and loved for his easy manner, willingness to help others, friendly nature, his love of a challenging game of cards, his great sense of humour and quick wit. Known to fewer people was his ability to break out in song with his excellent voice.

Mr. Cnossen held a special place in the hearts of all his nieces, nephews and the children of his friends, as he was always willing to spend time with them, showing his horses and telling stories in a way that captivated them. He also loved to participate in games with the children. As their uncle, he was respected and loved by all.

He will be dearly missed by his wife, family and many friends. He is survived by brothers Bob, Douglas and his wife Hilly, and by Andy and his wife Riet. He is also survived by brother-in-law John Knol and his wife Tina, sister-in-law Minny Mozina and her husband Henry.

He was born Aug. 30, 1921 in the hamlet of Irena, near Iroquois, to parents William and Cybil (McDermott) Cook. He was the third youngest of seven brothers, all of whom are deceased.

As a young boy, his family moved to the Cardinal area where he remained for the rest of his life.

It was during this time he met Mary Montgomery from Spencerville. They married in Nov. 1944 and were happily married for 55 years until Mary's passing in Jan. 2000. They had two children, Trudy and Sheldon who, in turn, gave them four grandchildren: Cheryl and Kimberly to Trudy and husband Donald Watson, and William and Matthew to Sheldon and wife Sandra (Somerville), as well as a great grandson Landon to Cheryl and Lance McIntosh.

Stewart's 33-year career at Canada Starch was varied. He started as a millwright and eventually became master mechanic, a position he would refer to as the move upstairs and a position he held until his retirement in 1983.

Stewart approached his job as he did his life, with interest and enthusiasm. He was proud of his accomplishments and his involvement in projects including the building of plants in Port Colborne and Winston Salem.

Another area of great interest to him was politics, especially municipal politics. His own local political career was a successful one, starting in 1957 when he was first elected as councillor. During the next 20 years, he held various positions such as deputy reeve, reeve, and finally, county council warden.

Stewart had many other interests and hobbies including working with and racing horses when he was young, curling, golfing and playing cards. He was always looking for a good game of euchre at the Legion in Cardinal.

He will be remembered most as a dedicated family man and a good friend and neighbour with a zest for life.

Burial was at Riverside Cemetery in Cardinal. The pallbearers were William Cook, Matthew Cook, Dale Cook, Richard Cook, Lance McIntosh and Ed Murphy.

In the '60s, John was an active member of the Prescott business community and service clubs, holding executive positions with the Canadian Order of Foresters League and the Rotary Club of Prescott. Throughout his life, John had a keen interest in world affairs as well as the local needs of the surrounding area.

John's early childhood on a farm in Austria left an indelible mark on him, one which John could not ignore. He stepped away from his business successes, and started again. Farming was in his blood and from the humble beginnings of a hobby farm with a few chickens and livestock, John would build a thriving dairy farm operation with the support of his entire family.

John's retirement years were too short but were focused on his wife, Trudy, and their family. He was an avid skier all his life and enjoyed gardening and reading. In his early years, other favourite pastimes included cycling, hiking and mountain climbing in Austria.

Just this past April 21, John and Trudy hosted a family gathering to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. John will be sadly missed and never forgotten. His legacy truly is his work ethic and what one can accomplish if one puts their mind to it.

He is survived by his wife Trudy (nee Stiefsohn), daughter Gloria Rezek (and husband Gordon), son John Fahrngruber Jr., son Peter Fahrngruber (and wife Debbie), daughter Denise Veale (and husband Bill), son Tom Fahrngruber (and wife Shari), 11 grandchildren, sister Theresia Gansberger and brother Joe Fahrngruber (and wife Vivian). He was predeceased by sister Barbara Hochreiter.

A private family gathering and funeral ceremony was held at the Roselawn Tribute Centre and Crematorium Tuesday, April 29, 2004. In remembrance, donations to the Diabetes Association or the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be gratefully acknowledged.
