Martha Alice Allen, 85

Martha Alice Allen, who lived in the Prescott area for more than 60 years, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003 at her residence, Wellington House, Prescott. She was in her 86th year.

She was born Oct. 30, 1917 in Kingston, the daughter of Walter Lannigan and Maria Peters. She was married to George Edward Allen.

Mrs. Allen is survived by her sons Thomas, William and Roger; daughters Jean, Myrtle and Mildred and their spouses; 20 grandchildren and several great grandchildren; sister Irene and her brother Edward and their spouses and her brother George.

She was predeceased by her parents Maria and Walter Lannigan, and her husband George Allen.

She was a member of Shanliwood Baptist Church, and she worked for various Industries before spending many years as a foster care provider with her husband. Mrs. Allen also worked as a housewife at home.

Visitation took place Monday, Oct. 13 at Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, where the funeral was held at 2:30 pm. Pastor A. Litchfield officiated. A committal service followed at Maynard Cemetery. A reception was held at the Dragon Garden Restaurant, Prescott.

Pallbearers were sons Roger and William Allen, grandsons Jeff, Phil, and Chris Allen, Ernest Robinson, Charles and Arthur Bass.

Elaine Amell, 57

Donna Elaine Amell of Henry Street West, Prescott, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002 at Brockville General Hospital. She was 57.

She was born June 5, 1945 in Brockville to Stanley Farley and the former Lenora Bradley. She was raised in the Prescott area.

She married Wayne Amell June 6, 1987 at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Prescott.

Mrs. Amell was a housewife, and enjoyed gardening, her husband and her dog Toby. She was a member of St. Andrew's Church, and was also active in supporting her husband in the Masonic Lodge in Prescott.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Amell is survived by her sons Todd and Shawn of Smiths Falls; stepson Gene of Ottawa; daughter Cathy of Oshawa and three step-daughters, Christine of Pittston, Karen of Brockville and Jessie of Prescott; as well as 15 grandchildren.

Also surviving are her brother Hardford (Bud) Farley; sisters Audrey Bilow, Pauline Tucker, Mary Malone and Lorraine Kerr; several nieces and nephews; her mother-in-law Jessie Amell, brother-in-law Morton Amell and wife Louise; and sister-in-law Bonnie Kearney and husband Des of Brockville.

She was predeceased by her parents; brothers Fred, Earl and Charles Farley; sister Leona Countryman; and brother-in-law Neil Amell.

Friends called at Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, where the funeral was held Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, with Rev. David Jones of First Presbyterian Church officiating. During the service, Gene Amell and Lorraine Kerr spoke and Karen Amell sang a solo. Burial will be at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, near Ingleside, at a later date.

Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.


George Armstrong, 88

George Edward Armstrong, of Spencerville, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002. He was 88 years old.

He was born in Matilda Township April 29, 1914, to Alex Armstrong and Jaramina Foot. Mr. Armstrong spent his life doing what he enjoyed the most ­ working his farm in the Shanly area. He was also a milk transport driver, transporting milk from the farms to the dairy. In 1943, he married Ruth Beckstead in the town of Dundela.

Among his favourite hobbies were fishing, bingo, playing cards, watching wrestling and visiting the Casino. He also had a keen interest for machinery and enjoyed spending his time repairing farm equipment.

He was the beloved husband of Ruth Beckstead of 59 years. He was the loving father of Edith Sipes of Morrisburg, George Armstrong Jr. of Cardinal, Stephen and Brenda Armstrong of Winchester, Barbara Armstrong of Spencerville, Audrey Typhair of Oxford Mills, Linda Mawhinney of Brockville and Ann Winters of Brockville. He is also survived by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation for the late George Armstrong was held at Grant Brown Funeral Home, Purcell Chapel, Spencerville, Saturday, Dec. 14 from noon to 2 pm. The funeral service followed in the chapel, officiated by Rev. Donald Wachenschwanz. Miriam Woodland was the organist for the service. Spring interment will be at South Gower Cemetery.

Memorial donations to a charity of choice would be gratefully acknowledged.


Garry Francis Arnott, 87

Garry Francis Arnott, resident of Cardinal and long-time beef farmer, died peacefully at Brockville General Hospital Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003.

Mr. Arnott was born in Wolseley, Saskatchewan Jan. 12, 1916, son of Ruth and Levi Arnott. He married Zelda Shaw, Dec. 8, 1945 in Melville, Saskatchewan.

He is survived by his loving wife Zelda and children Jewel Prosofsky and husband Ivan of Saskatoon, John Arnott and wife Kathy of Toronto, and Bob Arnott and wife Nicole of Cardinal. Loving grandfather of Jodi, Tyler, Janelle, Garrett, Jamie, Johanna, Jeffrey, Amy, Tim and Mike. He was the great grandfather of Jagger, Lincoln and Zavier; and dear brother of Ruby, Jean, Vic, Andy, Archie and Norman. He was predeceased by brothers Harvey and Keith.

As a young boy growing up on the farm in southern Saskatchewan, he and his brothers formed an Arnott hockey team. He was a professional jockey in the early 30s. At the outbreak of World War II, Mr. Arnott enrolled in the army and served five years overseas. After the war, Garry and Zelda married and settled in Atwater, Saskatchewan. In 1947, they made a permanent move to Cardinal, where they bought their farm. Mr. Arnott transported cattle to the U.S.A for a number of years and then successfully raised beef cattle.

Mr. Arnott was an avid sports fan as well as a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Cardinal Branch 105, and received his 55-year pin in 2002. During their retirement, Garry and Zelda enjoyed travelling in their motor home throughout Canada and the United States. They spent numerous winters in Arizona and Florida, where they took up golf. They shared many friendships and spent countless happy hours playing bridge and euchre. He remained on the farm until his passing.

A private family service in celebration of Mr. Arnott's life was held at Roselawn Tribute Centre and Crematorium Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, conducted by Rev. Arlyce Schiebout.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Cardinal. The family requests memorial donations be sent to Brockville General Hospital Building Fund.

Gordon Bass, 68

Gordon Bass, a resident of Edwardsburgh Township most of his life who most recently resided at RR 1 Brinston, died at home suddenly, Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003. He was 68.

He was born in Edwardsburgh Township May 31, 1934 to Robert Bass and Rebecca Alkerton. He had been the loving companion of Ida Smith for the past four years.

Mr. Bass had worked on the St. Lawrence Seaway, had been a heavy equipment operator, worked at the Johnstown elevator, for R.W. Myers, Township of Edwardsburgh and part-time for Connolly's farm.

Although he had resided in western Canada for a short time, Mr. Bass spent most of his life in the Cardinal and Spencerville areas, and the past four years in the Brinston area. He was a member of the United Church.

Mr. Bass is survived by his children: Charlie and his wife Pam of RR 1 Cardinal, Arthur and his wife Belinda of Ottawa, David of Merrickville, Becky and her husband Kevin Martin of Ottawa, and Heather and Jessica, both of Valparsio, Indiana; and brothers and sisters: Earl and his wife Ruth, Russell and his wife Joan, all of Spencerville, and Edith Ferrier of Perth.

He will be sadly missed by four grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents.

Friends called Friday, Jan. 17, 2003 at the Marsden McLaughlin Funeral Home, Cardinal, where the funeral service was held Saturday, Jan. 18 at 11 am, with Rev. Arlyce Schiebout officiating. A spring interment will be at Shanly Cemetery.

The pallbearers were Dave Sloan, Dave Dobbie, Steve and Dennis Liezert, Dan Connolly and James Cooper.

Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.


Robert Hugh Baynham, 54

Robert Hugh Baynham, 4652 4th Concession Road, Prescott, whose family and friends were among his main interests, died Monday, April 21, 2003 at his home. He was 54.

He was born April 14, 1949 in Brockville, the son of Leeland Baynham and Ella Fraser. He married Joanne Baynham (nee Brown) Nov. 28, 1986 in Brockville.

Mr. Baynham is survived by his wife Joanne; daughters Kelly Hitsman and Jacqueline Chretien (Mike Weathers) sons Kenneth Baynham (fiance Samantha Hart) and Hughie Jr.; parents Leeland and Ella Baynham; brother Lee (wife Emilia); and father-in-law Albert Brown. He was the uncle of Leeanne (Mrs Jim Canfield) and great uncle of Hillary and Taylor MacKenzie.

He is also survived by his grandson Trevor Hitsman and several wonderful brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Mr. Baynham was predeceased by his mother-in-law Evelyn Brown; grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Hugh H. Fraser; Mr. and Mrs. John Baynham, and a very special uncle, Glen Fraser.

He enjoyed helping others, welding, trucks and tractor pulls and working on vehicles. He was employed as a truck driver in the construction industry.

Visitation took place April 23 and 24, 2003 at Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, where the funeral service was held Friday, April 25, at 11 am. Rev. Gerry Ring officiated. A committal service followed at Maynard Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Hugh Jr., Lee Baynham, Dave Eaton, Howard Coville, Terry Read and Gary Spero.

Alice Louise Beckstead, 52

Alice Louise Beckstead of Spencerville died suddenly in her home Friday, Dec. 12, 2003. She was 52 years old.

She was born July 5, 1951 in Ventnor, the daughter of Gordon Davidson and Dorothy Wyatt. She was raised in Ventnor with many other siblings where she grew up on a family farm.

She was formally married to Arnold Beckstead of Dundela. After marrying Arnold in 1975, they lived for a number of years in Prescott, where they became proud parents of three, which were her pride and joy.

After living in Prescott for several years, she moved to Kemptville with her partner Ronald Toy. Alice and Ron then continued their lives in Spencerville.

In her younger years, she worked at Domtar in Prescott, Black and Decker in Brockville for 23 years, and was then later employed at Camalor in Brockville, where she had worked for 5 years.

Mrs. Beckstead is survived by her children Karen Beckstead (26) of Cardinal, Jason Beckstead (25) and Amanda Beckstead (20), both of Brockville. She was a proud grandmother of one, Brett Bradford. She was a sister of John Davidson (Bonnie) of Ventnor, Sylvia Marchand (Gordon) of Spencerville, Bernice Prosser (Carl) of Cardinal, Mary Jean Brown (Keith) of Prescott and Betty Higginson (Jim) of Alabama. She was also loved by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one sister, Helen Fleming, and one brother, Donald Davidson.

Mrs. Beckstead was a kind, caring, loving person with a very big heart. She was a giver when she had nothing to give, a mother to many, and a friend to all. Alice will be remembered for her good sense of humour, her family get-together every year, and her flirting with the guys at work whom she referred to as her boyfriends.

A real go-getter, she never needed a drink to have fun. She was the life of the party no matter where she was. She was not only known for her love of Pepsi, but for her love of her teddy bears, crossword puzzles, and playing volleyball with her family and friends. She will be sadly missed but will always live on in our hearts.

Friends called at Grant Brown Funeral Home in Spencerville Monday, Dec. 15, 2003, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service took place in the chapel of the funeral home Tuesday, Dec. 16 at 11 am, with Pastor Blair Paterson officiating. Burial followed at Adams Cemetery in Spencerville.

Pallbearers were Jim Liston, Dana Strang, Kevin Davidson, Dennis Marchand, Mathew Davidson and Mitch Davidson. Honourary pallbearers were Carman Beckstead and Arnold Beckstead. Those who wish may make a memorial donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in remembrance of Alice Beckstead.


Nettie Billinton, 88

Nettie Billinton of Prescott and formerly of Spencerville, died Friday, May 9, 2003. She was 87 years old.

She was born in England Feb. 20, 1915, the daughter of Albert and Maude (nee Baldwin) Skidmore.

In 1953, she emigrated to Canada from England, residing in Winnipeg from 1953 to 1956; Montreal from 1956-1969; Napanee from 1969-1978 and Spencerville from 1978-1998. She lived her last years at Wellington House Nursing Home in Prescott.

Mrs. Billinton's life revolved around her family. She was the beloved wife of the late Edwin Billinton; loving mother of Roy (Joyce) and Jack (Marilyn) all of Saskatoon, Molly Faessen (Martin) of Spencerville, and Nancy Gamble (Samuel) of Burlington; cherished grandmother of Leslie, Kevin, Michael, Christopher, Jeffrey, David, Robin, Jane, Stephen, Joanne, Susan, Nancy, Adam and great-grandmother of 18 children. She is also survived by her brother John Skidmore of Malaga, Spain.

The funeral service was held at Grant Brown Funeral Home, Purcell Chapel, Spencerville, Tuesday, May 13, 2003, officiated by Rev. Richard Woodland. Miriam Woodland was the organist for the service. Interment was at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland.

Memorial donations to Alzheimer Society would be gratefully acknowledged.


Catherine Mary Bollinger, 54

Catherine Mary Romat-Bollinger died peacefully at her Royal Crescent home in Prescott Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, after a brief illness. She was 54.

She was born Sept. 7, 1949 in Toronto to Anthony Bollinger and Beatrice Caden. She attended Ursuline High School in Regina, Saskatchewan and George Brown College in Toronto.

She began work for Sasktel in Regina in 1966 and stayed until 1969. In 1971, she started at GE in Barrie and was then transferred in 1986 to Black and Decker in Brockville. She remained at Black and Decker until an early retirement in 1994. In spring 1994 she began working in Prescott part time for Mr. Mugs coffee shop and Wellington House retirement home, eventually becoming the manager at Mr. Mugs.

In 1996 she started working at Mayfield Retirement Home for a year until she began work for Brown's Vending where she was employed DuPont and South Grenville District High School. In 2001, she started work at Grenville Christian College.

Besides her family, her passion was for her gardens where she spent many hours. She also had a keen interest in genealogy, and while researching was able to contact lost relatives and she enjoyed maintaining online relationships with them.

She is survived by and will be sadly missed by her husband Steven Street, sons Patrick (Teena) Romat and Michael Romat, both parents, sisters Denise and Loretta, nieces Norma Jean and Claire and their families, and nephew Will Street. She is also survived by grandchildren Savannah, Tanner and Travis.

Friends and family called at Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003. The Mass of Christian Burial for Catherine Bollinger was celebrated at St. Mark's Catholic Church, Prescott, Thursday, Oct. 2, at 11 am, with Father John Appelman officiating. Rev. Steven Shay of Grenville Christian College delivered words of remembrance. A committal service followed at Sandy Hill Cemetery in Prescott.

Active pallbearers were James Theaker, Ken Sturman, Walter Gorecki, Dennis Marchand, Chuck Street and Stephen Arbeau, with Jaime Sturman as honourary pallbearer.


Sidney Allan Bowers, 85

Sidney Allan Bowers, a resident of Kingston and formerly of Prescott, died at Kingston General Hospital Monday, Oct. 27, 2003. He was 85.

He was born Oct. 23, 1918 in Prescott, the son of Charles H. Bowers and Matilda Sterrett.

He was the beloved husband of the former Sylva Bilasano, whom he married in Prescott, and dear brother of Corinne Jenkinson of Prescott, Angela Whitney of Kincardine and Charles and his wife Norma of Prescott. He will be fondly remembered by brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and brothers Frederick and Charles Albert.

Mr. Bowers was a Royal Canadian Air Force Veteran (Moosemen's Squadron, Middleton, England). His many interests included lawn bowling, alley bowling, baseball, circus, carnival and photography. When the Tent Circus played in central New York, he used to come down to watch and visit friends and was well known in the area. He collected stamps, circus items and collector plates. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 560 (Kingston), Circus Historical Society and a lifetime member of the Prescott Lawn Bowling Club. He had been employed as a plasterer in the construction industry.

Visitation took place at Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, Friday, Oct. 31, 2003. The funeral service was held in the chapel of the funeral home Saturday, Nov. 1 at 1 pm, with his nephew, Rev. Craig Bowers, officiating. A committal service followed at Sandy Hill Cemetery, Prescott.

Memorial donations may be made to Kingston General Hospital.

Mr. Bowers wife, Sylva, would like to acknowledge the support of his brother and sisters and their families. Fred and Jessie Facun and the Filipina ladies from their church offered their continuous love, prayers and support, and Rev. Bowers gave the beautiful service. Norma Bilasano and Ariel organized the reception.


Arlean Bradford, 97

Arlean Bradford, a resident of Mayfield Retirement Centre in Prescott, died peacefully Wednesday, April 23, 2003. She was 97.

She was born Feb. 3, 1906 in Irena, Ont., the daughter of Alizon Seeley and Lyda Toye. She was married to Stanley Bradford.

A lifetime resident of Cardinal and area, Mrs. Bradford was a member of St. Paul's Anglican Church in Cardinal and a member of the Anglican Church Women.

She is survived by her sister Fay Brinston of Brinston, and Ola Laporte or Cornwall. She will be sadly missed by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, parents, sister Mildred Companion and brothers Ray, Wilfred and Clifford Seeley.

Funeral arrangements were in the care of Marsden McLaughlin Funeral Home, Cardinal. The funeral took place at St. Paul's Anglican Church, Cardinal, Friday, April 25, 2003 at 11 am, with Rev. Doug Hayman officiating. Interment was at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland. The pallbearers were Dan McLaughlin, David Lapier, Monica de Bruijn and Tom Coligan.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Paul's Anglican Church.


Ronald Brontmire, 70

Ronald Edward Brontmire died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003. He was 70.

Mr. Brontmire was born at Chesterville Aug. 1, 1933 to Charles Brontmire and Rose Harper. He married Luella Brontmire (nee Sayeau) Dec. 24, 1951 in Cardinal.

Mr. Brontmire is survived by his wife Luella; his children Connie (Mrs. Wilbert Shedrick), Harold (common law wife Kim Crawford), Elaine (Mrs. Ronald Robinson), Sheila (Mrs. Robert Leeder), Allan, Noreen (Mrs. Howard Bannister), Randy (wife Susan), Jill (Mrs. Michael Bernier), Bonnie (fiancé Derek McNeilly), Kelly (Mrs. Steven Patterson), Danny (wife Michelle) and Roxanne (Mrs. Anthony Harper); 44 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He was the brother of Sharon (Mrs. Douglas Shedrick).

He was predeceased by his parents.

Mr. Brontmire was a forklift operator at Ross Nutritional Products in Brockville. He enjoyed playing the guitar and fishing for mudpout.

Visitation took place Thursday, Aug. 7 at the Chris Slater Funeral Home Prescott. The funeral service took place Saturday, Aug. 9 in the chapel. Pastor Phil Phillips officiated. A committal service was held at Sandy Hill Cemetery, Prescott.

Pallbearers were his grandsons Calvin Shedrick, Lance and Chance Brontmire, Robert Leeder, William Leeder, Harry Carr, Kevin Perrin and nephew Andy Shedrick.

Melville Angus Bruce, 70

Following a lengthy battle with cancer plus other complications, Melville (Mel) Angus Bruce died peacefully in his sleep Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003. He was 70.

He was born Feb. 14, 1932, the eldest child of Beryl (nee Malcolmson) and the late Hugh Bruce of Spencerville.

Mr. Bruce leaves his loving family: wife Mabel (nee Holmes) of 48 years, children Judi Bruce of Kanata, David Bruce (Arlene Cooney) of Spencerville, and Cathy Horne (Don) of Heckston. Besides his mother Beryl, Mel is survived by his brothers Bill (Fran) and Ed (Mary), all from Spencerville, and sister Shirley Martin (Ray) of Prescott. He was predeceased by brother Doug.

Mel was "Bumpa" to his beloved grandchildren Bruce and Ken Donnelly, Natalie, Tiffanie and Amanda Bruce, Kyla, Taylor and Shannon Horne. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Mel graduated from Spencerville Continuation School and moved to Ottawa where he spent most of his career as a heavy equipment operator. He took pride in a job well done. In the early 60s, the family moved to South March where they remained until he and Mabel retired to their St. Lawrence River home from which Mel enjoyed watching the ships. He also enjoyed travelling. Some of his happiest hours were spent behind the wheel of his motor home touring throughout Canada. He was able to fulfill a dream of visiting the north when on his most recent trip, he toured the Northwest Territories and the Yukon, meeting the local people and visiting with new-found friends.

The many visitors and messages from old colleagues and friends during his illness were a testimony of his inspiration to others.

Visitation for the late Melville Bruce was held at Grant Brown Funeral Home, Purcell Chapel, Spencerville, Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003. The funeral service was held in Spencerville United Church, officiated by Patricia Swann. The music was supplied by Muriel Irving. A moving eulogy was read by Mr. Bruce's nephew and godson, Mark Bruce.

The pallbearers were Norman, Donnie and Robbie Bruce, Richard Beaudoin, Ray Martin and Mark Bruce. Honourary pallbearer was Steve Beaudoin. Following the service, friends gathered in the church hall for a time of fellowship and refreshments. Interment of cremated remains will follow at a later date.

Memorial donations to Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre Foundation or Kemptville District Hospital Tribute Fund would be gratefully appreciated.


Daro Bozidar Bukovac, 71

Daro Bozidar Bukovac (Dary) of RR3 North Augusta and formerly of Prescott, died at Kemptville District Hospital Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003. He was 71.

Mr. Bukovac was born in Dugaresa, Yugoslavia (Croatia) Dec. 4, 1931. He married Ruza (Rose) Bukovac (nee Malovic) in 1950 in St. Peter, Croatia.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting and belonged to the fish and game club. He had been employed as a building supervisor for D.C. Snelling Ltd.

Mr. Bukovac was predeceased by his wife Ruza (Rose) and his parents. He is survived by his sons Vlado (Juliana) and Daniel (Evelyn) and grandchildren Lee, Jessica and Ashley. He will be lovingly remembered by his brothers and sisters in Canada and abroad.

Friends called at Grant Brown Funeral Home, Purcell Chapel, Spencerville, Monday, Sept. 29, where the funeral service was held at 11 am. Father Rob Arsenault officiated. Miriam Woodland was the organist for the service. Interment took place at Blue Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Gary Gates, Alan Gates, Sonny Marchand, Ivo Malovic, Andre Malovic and Kevin Davidson.

Memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
