Sylvia June Hosack (nee Cockram) ended her long struggle with multiple sclerosis Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, at the home of her daughter in Tucson, Arizona. She was 78.
Born in St. Catharines, Ont., June 23, 1925, Mrs. Hosack sang her way through life. She attended Woodstock Collegiate Institute, Woodstock, Ont., and Bishop Strachan School for Girls, Toronto. She graduated from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto with her ARCT degree in singing in 1948.
She was a member of the Leslie Belle Singers and performed with them even after she married her husband Ross Oct. 9, 1948. That day, according to her journal, was the "happiest day of her life!"
Mrs. Hosack was a soprano soloist in Woodstock, Paris, Toronto and Prescott, Ont. She was also a member of the Brockville Operatic Society where she performed and starred in many operettas, including Naughty Marrietta, Sweethearts, Brigadoon, the Pajama Game and many others.
In 1966, in hopes of staving off the ravages of multiple sclerosis, Ross transferred to the American branch of Newell Manufacturing and moved the family to Redlands, California. Sylvia continued her focus on raising her four children and involvement in the new community. She was a past Regent and member of the Bow Belle Chapter of the Daughters of the British Empire and a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Redlands.
Predeceased by her husband Ross Edward Hosack and sister Patricia Mary Beatson, Sylvia is survived by her sister Joan Margaret Karn of Ottawa; her brother Peter Cockram of Port Rowan; her son Geoffrey Ross Hosack of Redlands California; daughters Brenda Marjorie Smith of Tucson, Arizona, Jenifer Alice McDonald of New York, N.Y., Roberta Louise Moyer of Vancouver, Washington; and eight grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of this very determined woman's life will be held at the Blue Church Cemetery west of Prescott in August 2004, where her cremated remains will join those of her much loved Ross.
Memorial donations may be made to the Blue Church, St. John's Anglican Church, Prescott, or Trinity Episcopal Church in Redlands, California.
Julienne Hubert, a long-time resident of 275 Water St., Prescott, who lived at Bridlewood Manor in Brockville since Oct. 2002, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital. She was 72.
She was born Feb. 26, 1930 at Ste. Marthe, Quebec, the daughter of Ovilda Seguin and Josephine Massee. She married Pierre Hubert May 14, 1955 at St. Mark's Catholic Church, Prescott.
She is survived by her husband Pierre; daughter Monique Brunet and her husband Ron of North Augusta; son Don and his wife Judy of Almonte; grandchildren Ted, Marc, Daniel and Michael; sisters Marguerite Bissionnette and her husband Roland of Hamilton, Germaine Trudeau and her husband Gilles of Prescott, Marie Boileau and her husband Tony of Prescott; brother Simon Sequin and his wife Darlene of Cornwall; sisters-in-law Madeline Seguin of Prescott and Aurore Seguin of Hamilton; and by several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Hubert was predeceased by her parents; daughter Lise; brothers Oscar, Ovila, Rene, Rosaire, and Maurice Seguin; sister Rita Ross; and son-in-law Dwayne.
Mrs. Hubert was a member of the Catholic Women's League, and enjoyed sewing and playing euchre and bingo. She especially loved being with her family and many friends.
Visitation took place at Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mark's Catholic Church Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 11 am with Father J. Appelman and Father Rob Arsenault officiating. A reception catered by the CWL followed at St. Mark's Parish Hall. A committal service will be held in the spring at St. Mark's Cemetery. Cremation took place at Cataraqui Crematorium.
The pallbearers were Ted Livingston, Daniel Hubert, David Seguin, Rick Seguin, Michael Seguin and George Ross.
Memorial donations may be directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and Canadian Cancer Society.
Katherine Mary Johnston, a resident of 304-315 Water St. in Prescott, died of complications from cancer Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital. She was 58.
Miss Johnston was born in Brockville Dec. 21, 1944 to Keith Johnston and Mary (nee Ferguson) Johnston.
She was a long-time employee of CIL as a secretary in a variety of departments in Montreal. She transferred to Toronto for ICI Canada and worked in treasures and financial services. Miss Johnston took early retirement in Oct. 1995 and returned to Prescott to reside with her mother.
Miss Johnston continued to keep busy as a dedicated volunteer at the Prescott Public Library. She was also a valued volunteer for many years at Boundary Street Public School; Miss Johnston also enjoyed knitting and crocheting blankets for children at CHEO.
She is survived by her brother Bill (wife Sylvia) and cousin Carolyn (Mrs. Herb Burke). Miss Johnston was predeceased by her parents.
Cremation was at Glenhaven Cemetery Aug. 11, 2003. A graveside service officiated by Rev. John Reynolds was held Friday, Aug. 15, 2003 at Sandy Hill Cemetery, Prescott.
Arrangements were made by Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott.
Memorial donations may be made to the Prescott Public Library.
Michael John Joyce, 190 Victor Rd., Prescott, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003 at his home, where he lived most of his life. He was 36.
He was born Dec. 10, 1966 in Brockville to Michael F. Joyce and the former Marion L. Thorpe.
Mr. Joyce is survived by his sister Sandra Joyce and Brent Coville. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents.
His main interest in life was Christmas. He took great enjoyment and pride in decorating his home inside and out, in the spirit of christmas. As an adult, Mr. Joyce dedicated his time to his mother until her death in 2002.
His past occupation was a gas station attendant.
Friends called at Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, Friday, Oct. 3, 2003. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mark Catholic Church Oct. 4, 2003 at 11 am by Father John Appelman. The committal service followed at St. Mark's Cemetery, Prescott.
The pallbearers were Craig Rayvals, Rob Joyce, Joe MacDonald, Mike Shanahan, Larry and Art Joyce. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
