Clayton Seeley, 88

Clayton Seeley, a life-time resident of the Cardinal area, died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002 at St. Lawrence Lodge, Brockville. He was 88.

He was born April 19, 1914 in Rowena, Ontario, the son of David Seeley and Sarah Hess. He married Pearl Simpson Feb. 20, 1936 in Iroquois.

Mr. Seeley had been employed as a pipefitter at CASCO for more than 37 years. He was a member of the United church and a member of the seniors' club. His interests included hobby farming, playing cards, gardening, fishing and feeding stray animals. Mr. Seeley also enjoyed his pipe and other refreshments, and sitting on the verandah watching the traffic and waving to those who drove by.

He is survived by his children: Agnes (Mrs. Ken Boyd) of RR 3 Prescott, Bill (Barb), Frank (Nina), Gerald (Lynne) and Dale (Marianne), all of Cardinal. He will be sadly missed by 13 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife Pearl, son Nelson Aden, brothers Mahlon, Coleman and Douglas, and by grandson Alan Boyd.

Friends called at Marsden McLaughlin Funeral Home, Cardinal, where the funeral was held Friday, Dec. 27, 2002 at 11 am, with Rev. Arlyce Schiebout officiating. Interment was at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland.

The pallbearers were Martin Stobo, Alex Seeley, Greg Seeley, Norm Plume, Peter Boyd, Don MacLeod.

Kathaleen W. Selleck, 84

Kathaleen Winnifred Selleck, whose main interests were her church, family and friends and who resided at 324 King St W., Prescott, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, at Brockville General Hospital. She was 84.

She was born Sept. 3, 1918 in Matilda Township, the daughter of Samuel Gilmer and Etta Ann Thompson. She married Garnet Alton Selleck Dec. 9, 1936 in Edwardsburgh Township.

Mrs. Selleck is survived by her son Wayne and his wife Margaret; granddaughter Penny Lee Arthurs and her husband Scott; great grandchildren Haley, Tobia, Chelsey and Hannah; sister Evelyn Bowbeer, Lila Gilmer, Freda Gilmer, Hilda (Mrs. Ray Langstaff) Elton Gilmer and his wife Jean; sisters-in-law Kay and Dorothy Gilmer; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Garnet Selleck; sister Marion Gilmer; and brothers Gerald and Charlie Gilmer.

Mrs. Selleck loved people, doing activities with the family, visiting friends that were sick (shut in), and going out to dinner with family and friends. She enjoyed her coffee club, exercise group and church work.

She had been employed as a line worker at Prescott Paper Products.

Visitation was at Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003. The funeral service took place at St. Paul's United Church, Prescott, Feb. 19 at 2 pm, with Rev. Blair Paterson, Rev. John Reynolds and Pastor David Bowbeer (her nephew), officiating. A eulogy was given by great grand daughters Chelsey and Haley Arthurs and nephew Pastor David Bowbeer.

A committal service will be held in the spring at South Gower Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Tobi Arthurs, Carl Bowbeer, Rick Langstaff, Doug Bowbeer, Rodney Langstaff and Chris Hanes.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Paul's Church roof fund.


Ruby Ida Shannon, 77

Ruby Ida Shannon, of Prescott, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at Brockville General Hospital. She was 77.

She was born Oct. 9, 1925 in Kemptville, the daughter of Charles Shepperd and Estelle Wilson. She was predeceased by her husbands, Leonard Shannon and Morgan Barnard.

Mrs. Shannon was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, Brockville General Hospital and Canada Post as a Mrs. Santa letter writer. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Royal Canadian Legion and Spencerville Mill Foundation. She had been employed as a secretary at an insurance broker's office and on a mail route in Spencerville.

She is survived by her daughter Beverley Sloan and her husband Ron; son Bill Barnard and his wife Jackie; grandchildren Jeff and his fiance Amy Finucan, Danny Sloan, Jodi Hunter and her husband Chad, and Darryl Barnard; great grandchild Delaney Hunter; sister Ethel Moore; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also predeceased by her parents, brothers Donald and Howard Shepperd, and her sister Edna Shepperd.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott. There was no visitation. A memorial service took place at Spencerville United Church, Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002 at 11 am, with Cathy Kelso officiating. Her sister-in-law Mabel Shannon said the eulogy.

Cremation took place at Cataraqui Crematorium Dec. 14.

Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.


Walter Charles Smail Sr., 78

Walter Charles Smail Sr., a life-time resident of Cardinal, died peacefully at his home, Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002. He was 78.

He was born March 9, 1924 in Cardinal, the son of Anson Smail and Annie Owers. He married Wilda May VanCamp June 16, 1947 in Cardinal.

Mr. Smail was overseas for four years during WW11 with the Lords Strathcona Horse Regiment. Upon returning home, he went to work for the Canada Starch Company in Cardinal, where he was employed for forty years in the machine shop. He retired in 1984.

Mr. Smail was a member of St. Paul's Anglican Church in Cardinal. He enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Iroquois Golf Club. He enjoyed many great times with his family and friends over his life time. He was a long-time fan and helper of the Cardinal Pats Fastball Team. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 105 and Masonic Lodge, Cardinal No. 491.

He is survived by his sons Tom and his wife JoAnn and Walter and his wife Beth. He was the grandfather to Brian (Karie) Smail, Danielle (Brent) Napier, Mike Smail, Shawna (Adam) and Kortney and Nathan Smail and the great grandfather to Anson Smail of Brockville. He was a brother-in-law to Reginald Baynham of Brockville and Ellen VanCamp of Windsor.

Mr. Smail is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be sadly missed by his long-time friend, Keitha Patterson, and anyone who knew him. He was a kind and gentle man.

Friends called at the Marsden McLaughlin Funeral Home, Cardinal. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 105 held a service Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002 for their fellow comrade. The funeral was held Monday, Nov. 18, with Rev. Doug Hayman officiating.

Pallbearers were Garry Kavanaugh, Bob McDonald, Wes Baldwin, Ted Hoy, Gord Woods and Ed Orzel. Interment was at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland.

Annie A. Smith, 82

Annie A. Smith of Cardinal died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital. She had fallen and broken her hip July 11, and then developed pneumonia. She was 82.

She was born Feb. 22, 1921 in Mountain Township to Alfred Hanes and Nancy Crowder. She married Hector Smith Aug. 23, 1941 in Williamsburg; her husband died Oct. 11, 2003.

Mrs. Smith was a member of Sacred Heart RC Church, and worked as a homemaker. She also enjoyed having a large garden and selling her vegetables from her roadside stand in front of her home. She loved playing cards and doing word searches.

She is survived by her children Betty Ann Gill and her husband Tom of Amherstview; Dianna Mackay and her husband Pat of Unionville, Maryland; Philip and his wife Cheryl of Brockville; Dan and his wife Carol of Athens; and Ron and his wife Evelyn of Goderich.


Hector Smith, 91

Hector Smith of Cardinal died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003 at Sherwood Park Manor. He had been in failing health for the past two years. He was 91.

Mr. Smith was born Aug. 16, 1912 in London, England, the son of Annie Smith. His father's name is unknown. He married Annie Hanes Aug. 23, 1941 in Williamsburg. She predeceased him on Sept. 3, 2003.

Mr. Smith worked as a shipper for Casco for more than 40 years, and he looked after the Cemeteries in Cardinal for a number of years. He was a member of Sacred Heart RC Church in Cardinal.

Mr. Smith enjoyed having a small farm and selling eggs to people from Cardinal and surrounding areas. He also enjoyed visits from family and friends.

He is survived by his children Betty Ann Gill and her husband Tom of Amherstview; Dianna Mackay and her husband Pat of Unionville, Maryland; Philip and his wife Cheryl of Brockville; Dan and his wife Carol of Athens; and Ron and his wife Evelyn of Goderich.

He was the grandfather of Paul, Bradford, Meghan (Mike), Bradley (Melissa), Scott (Raina), Michelle, Troy and Adam. He was the great-grandfather of Shaelyn and Joshua.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Shane Gill.

A private family service was held at Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Cardinal, Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003 at 11 am, with Father John Appelman officiating. Interment was at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Cardinal.

Helen Irene Smith, 94

Helen Irene (Latourell) Smith, a former school teacher in South Grenville who resided in Iroquois most of her life, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003. She was in her 95th year.

She was born in South Gower Jan. 21, 1908 to William and Matilda Latourell. With her two older brothers, Frank and Harold, and younger sister Donella, the family was raised in a loving and nurturing atmosphere, and she developed a strong sense of family, which she maintained throughout her lifetime.

Mrs. Smith received her education in Kemptville, where she was an outstanding student, and at the age of 16, she entered McMaster University and graduated in 1929 with a degree in English and History. Following training at Ontario College of Education, she became principal at Hallville Consolidated School. A year later, she went on to teach for 38 years in Iroquois, Cardinal, Prescott and Spencerville.

While teaching in Iroquois, she met and married her husband Harry (Bud) Smith, who predeceased her Sept. 30, 1990. They raised five girls: Bonnie, Sandra, Sharon, Cheryl and Shelley, who witnessed many local students being tutored around the kitchen table until she passed her 90th birthday.

In addition to her teaching career, Mrs. Smith was a councillor and deputy reeve in Iroquois for six years, was a member of a reading club, performed in drama productions and enjoyed public speaking.

Her focus in life was children. Her 11 grandchildren (Meridee, Robin, Rondalyn, Kendra, Hali, Janice, Kimberley, Heather, Matthew, Jeremy and Burke) and 10 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, heard many stories, looked at countless family photos and ate special mouth-watering apple pies, mounds of pancakes and loaves of home-made bread.

She was an outstanding lady who never veered from her role as mother, grandmother, aunt, teacher, friend and citizen.

The funeral service for Mrs. Smith took place Monday, Jan. 20, 2003. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Marsden McLaughlin Funeral Home, Iroquois.


Marguerite Stephenson, 91

Marguerite Fannie Stephenson, St. Lawrence Lodge, Brockville, died Saturday, July 5, 2003 at her residence. She was 91.

Mrs. Stephenson was born Jan. 7, 1912 in West Bloomfield, N.Y., the daughter of Hiram Coville and Amanda Bertha Moore. She married Larmour Stephenson Nov. 1, 1929 in Ogdensburg, N.Y.

She is survived by her daughters: Doris Stephenson of Brockville, Dora Amanda Steele (John) of Brockville and Carolyn Forsyth (Garfield) of North Augusta; her sons: Larmour Jr. (Edna) of Maynard, Albert (Dorothy) of Prescott and Daniel (Jenniffer) of North Augusta; and brother Hiram Coville Jr. of Brockville. She was the grandmother of eight and great-grandmother of nine. She was also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Stephenson was predeceased by her parents, husband Larmour Sr., son Samuel, sister Mrs. Robert Findlay, and brothers Charles, Kenneth and Eugene Coville.

Her main interests centered around her family and home, and she loved flower and vegetable gardening. She liked to bake, sew and decorate the home, and she loved to crochet, embroider and paint. She enjoyed reading and listening to music, and attended Pentecostal Church and Sunday school. She worked as a housewife at home.

Visitation took place Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, where the funeral service followed in the chapel. Pastor David Downing officiated. A committal service was held at Maynard Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Lloyd Stephenson, Michael Stephenson, Ron Pilla, Wayne Lafave, Garfield Forsyth and John Steele.

Rita A. Swartzfigure, 73

After a lengthy illness, Rita A. Swartzfigure (Poaps) died at the Canton Nursing Home Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at the age of 73.

She was the dear daughter of the late Florence and William Poaps of Cardinal. She was also predeceased by her husband Bob; an only son, Bill; and a brother, John Poaps.

Surviving sisters are Bea Devaul of Ottawa, Wanda Strader of Oxford Station and Bet (Bob) Farmer of Prescott.

Mrs. Swartzfigure was cremated, and a service was held at Fox McLellan Funeral Home in Ogdensburg, N.Y., Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003.

John Harvey Thompson, 68

John Harvey Thompson, 184 Victor Rd., Prescott, died peacefully at his home Friday, Jan. 24, 2003. He was 68.

He was born March 1, 1934 in Prescott, the son of George W. Thompson and Ella S.J. Beckstead.

Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife, the former Muriel Ann Casselman, whom he married Dec. 21, 1956 in Prescott. He is also survived by his son Victor J. Thompson of Edmonton, Alberta; a daughter, Valerie, and her husband Gerry Foster of Prescott; and two grandchildren, Darren and Heather Thompson of Edmonton, Alberta. Also left to mourn him are his sister Jennie (Edward) Clifford of Cardinal and brother William (Barbara) Thompson of Brockville and their families. He will be missed by his mother-in-law, Margaret Casselman, of Iroquois; and numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, George and Ella Thompson.

Mr. Thompson was born and educated in Prescott, then in Toronto. In 1955-56 he worked for Dewline in Newfoundland. After marrying Ann, he worked for Prescott Machine and Welding, then Hub Equipment in Scarborough. He retired in July 1993 from DuPont Maitland Works, where he was employed for about 33 years as a construction millwright.

He identified with St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Prescott, and for 50 years he was a member of the Amity #80 IOOF in Prescott.

Mr. Thompson enjoyed hunting, target pistol shooting and bird watching. His hobbies included his well equipped workshop. In 1957, he built his own home.

He wanted to do more camping, so he built a tent trailer which they used to travel extensively in Canada and U.S.A. For his son's first car, he remolded a mini miner into a hot rod. Mr. Thompson's door was always open for friends and family who had a project on the go and needed his advice or his workshop to solve a problem or two.

He loved his visits with his grandchildren, and he had a great sense of humor and enjoyed teasing his sisters-in-law.

Mr. Thompson's greatest pleasure was his private pilot adventures, and his family was always flying after he constructed his two experimental aircrafts, especially to those fly-in breakfasts they attended.

In the later years of his life, Mr. Thompson had a heart condition and kidney problems. Several times each week during the past year, he attended Bayshore Healthcare in Brockville for kidney dialysis.

Family and Friends called Monday, January 27, 2003, for visitation and funeral services at Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott. Reverend Ian MacLean from St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Prescott, officiated.

Pallbearers were Chris Thompson, Brian Clifford, Gary Hutt, Steven Casselman and Anthony Vanderbruggen. Honorary pallbearers were Gerry Foster, Edward Clifford, and William Thompson. Interment was at Roselawn Cemetery, Maitland.

The funeral reception was held at Friendship Hall organized by the Wellington Rebekah Lodge #108.

Memorial Donations were requested by the family to be given to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Kidney Foundation.

Gunther Tite, 75

Gunther Tite, RR1 Prescott, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. He was 75.

He was born Feb. 10, 1928, in Germany, the son of August Tite and Lina Simanofski. He married Renate Tite (nee Gerstberger) Dec. 17, 1955 in Montreal.

He is survived by his wife Renate; son Ronald (Laura); grandchildren Christopher, Jordan and Erin; and sister Eva Lukat.

He was predeceased by his parents, son Michael, and sister Irmgard Weinzierl.

Boating, camping, swimming and travelling were among his favourite interests. He was employed as a machinist at Motor Coils Manufacturing.

Visitation took place Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003 at Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, where the funeral service followed in the chapel at 2 pm. Pastor Tim Kuhlmann officiated. A reception was held at St. Mark's Parish Centre.

The committal service took place Dec. 7, 2003 at 3 pm at Sandy Hill Cemetery, Prescott.

Pallbearers were Hans and Andre Seiffert, Heaus Plaetzchke, Stan Kodrun, Leo Kaschube and Brian Morton .

Memorial donations may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.


Edna Pearl Todd, 87

Edna Pearl Todd, 87, died at Wellington House, Prescott, Friday, Oct. 3, 2003. She was born Feb. 27, 1916 at Hainsville to Ernest Fader and the former Mabel Gilmour.

At age 18, the family moved to the Point at Iroquois and she worked at the Caldwell Linen Mill as a weaver. On July 26, 1941 she married Kenneth Todd in Williamsburg and moved to Cardinal where she helped care for her ailing father-in-law. She was a member of St. Paul's Anglican Church, Cardinal, belonged to the ladies auxiliary of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 105 and quilted with the church ladies.

She enjoyed gardening and her home was adorned with many plants. Her family benefitted from her preserves, pickling and baking. Her apple pie was second to none.

Mrs. Todd is survived by her daughter DeeDee and her husband Garry Kavanaugh of Cardinal and her son Randy and his wife Leslie of Prescott, grandchildren Jackie and her husband Terry Kirkey, Nancy and her husband Danny Bueto, Matthew, Michael and Katie Todd, and great-grandchildren Tara and Todd Kirkey and Tracey and Tyler Bueto.

She is also survived by her brothers Kenneth and Ernest Fader and by a sister, Nelda Brown and sister-in-law Jenny Fader.

Mrs. Todd was predeceased by her husband Ken in 1990, brother Cecil Fader and sister Gladys Gill.

Friends called at Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Cardinal, Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003. The funeral service was held at St. Paul's Anglican Church, Cardinal, Oct. 6 at 11 am, with Reverend Doug Hayman officiating. Burial took place at St. Paul's Anglican Cemetery, Cardinal.

Pallbearers were Sheldon Gill, Ralph Dukelow, Arnold Fader, Bob McDonald, Terry Kirkey and Danny Bueto.

Donations to the Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Lung Association would be gratefully acknowledged by the family.

Bernadine Yandeau, 77

Bernadine Elizabeth (Terry) Yandeau, a resident of Wellington House Nursing Home, Prescott, for the past two months and formerly of Shanly Road, Cardinal, died following a two-year illness Wednesday, July 23, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital. She was 77.

Born in The Hague, Holland, June 21, 1926, she was the daughter of Jan VanNoord and Bernadina VanNoord. She married Wilfred Yandeau Oct. 14, 1971 in Prescott. Mrs. Yandeau was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Cardinal and a member of the Catholic Women's League.

She is survived by her children, Robert Hope and his wife Jeanne of Edmonton, and Sara Janes and her husband Vern of Cardinal; Kenneth (Norma) Yandeau, and Eddie (Anna) Yandeau; nine grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents and husband.

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Cardinal, Thursday, July 24, 2003. The funeral service took place at the funeral home Friday, July 25 at 10 am, with Father Robert Arsenault officiating. Interment was at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Cardinal.
