And the winners are... PRESCOTT - Time is running out to put forth nominations for three prestigious Prescott and District Chamber of Commerce awards. The awards will be handed out during the Annual General Meeting and Awards Night. CJOH TV news anchor Max Keeping has been confirmed as the guest speaker for the event, which will be held Monday, Jan. 25. The dinner gala and recognition night will be held at St. Mark's Parish Centre. Tickets for the event are $20 and will be available to chamber members at the end of December. The chamber is seeking nominations for its three annual awards Community Service Award, Business Achievement Award and Connie Dickey Youth Award. The Community Service Award is a special honor for an individual from the South Grenville area that has made a special contribution to the community through a singular activity or through a variety of commitments over the years which have helped make this area a better place to live. Fred Stretton was the 1998 winner. The Business Achievement Award is meant to recognize the many good corporate citizens that exist in this area, be they large manufacturers or small retailers. Nominations can be based on a number of reasons, including contribution to the community, innovative business strategies; or management and employee involvement in community activities. DuPont's Maitland Site received the award last January. The Connie Dickey Youth Award is presented annually by Geoff and Judy Caldwell and family in the memory of the late Connie Dickey. The award recognizes youth (aged 14-19) from the South Grenville area that have given unselfishly of their time to help others and whose efforts have resulted in contributing toward a positive influence in the community. Nominations are being accepted for all three awards. Please submit name and reasons for nomination to Awards Committee, Prescott and District Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 2000, Prescott, Ont., K0E 1T0. For further information, contact Mike Baril at 925-4277 or 925-3757. DuPont sells hydrogen peroxide plant MAITLAND DuPont Canada's Maitland Site announced recently the sale of its hydrogen peroxide facility to Kemira Chemical Canada Inc. Although a final price tag wasn't released, DuPont officials confirmed all employees, including the management team, have accepted positions with the new owner. The sale of the hydrogen peroxide plant closes the book on the final stage of a divestiture process that began last February. In late June, DuPont announced it had reached a deal to sell the hydrogen peroxide plant to Oriental Chemicals Industry (OCI), a Connecticut-based company. However, that deal fell through when OCI could not reach final agreement with its lender. The hydrogen peroxide facility is one of five business units located at DuPont's Maitland site. The agreement is contingent on the non-objection of all relevant government authorities. Kemira Chemicals is based out of Finland, with a strong business presence in the pulp and paper making industry. The company provides a full compliment of mix components used in the pulp and paper making industry, one of which is hydrogen peroxide. Kemira also manufactures other industrial chemicals, including water treatment chemicals, titanium dioxide pigments, plant nutrients, points and colour processing systems. The product range of the Kemira Group also includes personal protective equipment and catalytic converters. The purchase gives Kemira to expand its operations into North America. The company already has a strong presence in Europe and Asia. Upon final completion of the deal, the acquisition makes Kemira one of the five largest producers of hydrogen peroxide. The Maitland hydrogen peroxide plant has an annual capacity of 41,000 tonnes. "Our position in North America will be significantly strengthened," said Kemira president Yrjö Sipilä of the DuPont acquisition. |
